HEAVY DUTY, WAIMEA
Rumors of the Eddie started last week but it wasn't meant to be. There was swell though and it was big. All the regulars plus quite a few women were out charging. Meanwhile on the inside a couple of foolhardy souls were taught a lesson by the powerful shorebreak.

MAVERICK'S: IN RARE FORM
Its been some time since Maverick's broke as big and as clean as it did on January 4th. Peter Mel, Anthony Tashnick, Zac Wormhoudt, Nathan Fletcher, Shane Desmond, Josh Loya, Jeff Clark, Matt Ambrose, Richard Schmidt and Mike Brummett were all hand bearing witness.
TREES GOES OFF
After being introduced to the surf world during last March's XXL swells, Monterey's biggest, meanest wave made itself known again on January 4th. Tyler Smith, Russell Smith, Tyler Fox, Don Curry, among others, spent the day towing into some serious bombs.
NEW YEAR'S BANG
First light on December 31st saw some clean and perfcect 25-foot surf heave into Waimea Bay. And while the locals were on it at dawn, by noon, the swell had dropped to 15 foot. Suffice to say, though, more than one North Shore big-wave surfer woke up with a smile on his face.
JAWS OPENS UP
Jaws hasn't really started off the season with a bang like last year, but Maui's most famous big wave did see a few days of giant surf in the last week of December. The swells were kinda west, making for a few closeout sets, but compared to last year, crowds have been light.
